What I do is add them in post. In other words, photoshop.

To add flares, glows and other FX in Poser is a nightmare and waists precious memory with transparency maps. What I do is crank up the AMBIENT color level of the parts I want to glow. Like the center stone of the staff. Then once it's rendered, I add a haze around that element to give it a nice incandesce glow.

Cool, I use GIMP because I don't want to purchase another program, but that should get a close result to photoshop.
